Sleep Treatment
The Dental Approach to Better Sleep

Sleep is the most important part of the day. At SHDC, we assess and treat the dental and airway factors that compromise your sleep — from snoring and sleep apnoea to bruxism and mouth breathing.

Why Sleep Matters

The Airway–Sleep–Health Connection

Do you wake up feeling refreshed? Sleep is the most important part of the day — and the size and shape of your mouth and airway directly determine how well you breathe during sleep.

Waking up at night to go to the toilet can reflect dysfunctional breathing at night. Mouth breathing may be involved. Snoring can also affect breathing and health in ways that extend far beyond the bedroom.

At SHDC, sleep is one of our five pillars of health. We assess the dental and airway factors that compromise your sleep and work with you — and a network of specialists — to restore it.

Signs You May Have a Sleep-Breathing Disorder

You snore loudly or have been told you stop breathing during sleep

You wake up feeling unrefreshed, even after a full night's sleep

You experience morning headaches or jaw pain

You grind or clench your teeth (bruxism)

You are a mouth breather during sleep or at rest

You wake frequently during the night, including to use the bathroom

You suffer from daytime fatigue, brain fog, or difficulty concentrating

Your child snores, breathes through their mouth, or has behavioural concerns

Conditions We Treat

Sleep-Breathing Disorders & Dental Health

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)

OSA occurs when the airway partially or fully collapses during sleep, causing repeated breathing interruptions. Left untreated, it is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline.

Snoring

Snoring is caused by partial airway obstruction during sleep. While often dismissed, it is a warning sign of compromised breathing and can significantly impact sleep quality for both the patient and their partner.

Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome

A less severe but equally disruptive condition where increased airway resistance causes frequent micro-arousals, leading to unrefreshing sleep and daytime fatigue.

Bruxism & Sleep-Disordered Breathing

In 70–80% of cases, teeth grinding at night reflects the body's attempt to open the airway. Treating the airway — not just the grinding — addresses the root cause.

Mouth Breathing

Chronic mouth breathing alters the development of the jaw and airway, affects sleep quality, and is linked to a wide range of health issues including poor posture, dental decay, and impaired immune function.

Our Approach

How We Treat Sleep-Breathing Disorders

01

Comprehensive Sleep & Airway Assessment

We assess your airway, jaw structure, breathing patterns, and sleep history to identify the nature and severity of your sleep-breathing disorder.

02

Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD)

A custom-fitted oral appliance that gently repositions the lower jaw forward during sleep, keeping the airway open and reducing or eliminating snoring and mild-to-moderate OSA.

03

Myofunctional Therapy

Targeted exercises to retrain the tongue, lips, and facial muscles to promote nasal breathing and correct tongue posture — addressing a key contributor to airway collapse.

04

Sleep Study Referral

Where moderate-to-severe OSA is suspected, we coordinate referral for a home or in-lab sleep study to confirm diagnosis and guide treatment planning.

05

Collaborative Care

We work with sleep physicians, ENT specialists, and myofunctional therapists to ensure a comprehensive, coordinated approach to your sleep health.

Children & Sleep-Disordered Breathing

Sleep-disordered breathing in children can have significant consequences for growth, development, behaviour, and learning. Signs include snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, bedwetting, and behavioural or attention difficulties. Early intervention — including myofunctional therapy and airway-focused orthodontics — can make a profound difference.
