The Dental Connection
Your Jaw May Be the Source of Your Headaches
The mouth is the most sensitive part of the body, affecting the balance of muscles and joints throughout the body. With this knowledge, we have helped many patients suffering from chronic tension headaches, neck aches, and jaw (TMJ) joint problems.
Do you wake up with a headache, neck, or jaw ache? Holistic dentistry often uncovers the solution to these and many other frustrating conditions.
Do you grind or clench your teeth at night? In 70–80% of cases, this reflects sleep-disordered breathing — and addressing the airway can resolve the headaches at their source.
Signs Your Headaches May Have a Dental Cause
You wake up with headaches, particularly in the morning
You experience jaw pain, clicking, or limited opening
You have been told you grind or clench your teeth
Your headaches are often located at the temples or base of the skull
You have neck pain or shoulder tension alongside headaches
Your headaches worsen during periods of stress
Previous medical investigations have found no clear cause
Understanding the Root Cause
Common Dental Causes of Chronic Headaches
TMJ Dysfunction
The temporomandibular joint connects your jaw to your skull. When this joint is misaligned or under stress, it can trigger chronic tension headaches, facial pain, and neck aches.
Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
Grinding or clenching your teeth — often during sleep — places enormous strain on the jaw muscles and joints, frequently causing morning headaches and neck pain.
Bite Imbalance
An uneven bite forces your jaw muscles to work harder to compensate. Over time, this chronic muscle tension can radiate pain to the temples, forehead, and neck.
Sleep-Disordered Breathing
In 70–80% of cases, grinding and clenching reflect sleep-disordered breathing. Addressing the airway often resolves the headaches at their source.
Muscle Tension
The muscles of the jaw, neck, and shoulders are intimately connected. Dental stress can create a chain reaction of muscle tension that presents as chronic headaches.
Our Approach
How We Treat Dental-Related Headaches
Comprehensive Assessment
We begin with a detailed examination of your jaw joints, bite, and muscle tension patterns to identify the root cause of your headaches.
Occlusal Splint Therapy
A custom-fitted night splint repositions the jaw and relieves pressure on the TMJ and surrounding muscles, reducing or eliminating headache frequency.
Bite Correction
Where bite imbalance is identified, we may recommend selective equilibration, restorations, or orthodontic treatment to restore proper occlusion.
Airway Evaluation
If sleep-disordered breathing is suspected, we assess the airway and may refer for a sleep study or recommend myofunctional therapy.
Collaborative Care
We work with a network of allied health practitioners — physiotherapists, osteopaths, and sleep specialists — to address all contributing factors.
