General

What makes SHDC different from a conventional dental practice?

SHDC takes a whole-body approach to dentistry. We consider how oral health connects to systemic health — including the impact of dental materials, airway function, and bite on your overall wellbeing. We use only biocompatible materials and apply evidence-based biological protocols across all treatments.

Do you accept new patients?

Yes, we welcome new patients. We recommend starting with a New Patient Consultation, which gives our team time to understand your full health history, concerns, and goals before recommending any treatment.

What are your opening hours?

We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. We are closed on weekends and public holidays.

Where are you located?

We are located at Level 17, 111 Elizabeth Street, Sydney NSW 2000 — in the heart of the Sydney CBD, close to Town Hall and St James stations.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. We accept AfterPay and Zip Pay, allowing you to spread the cost of treatment over time. Please speak with our reception team for details.

Amalgam Removal

Is it safe to have my amalgam fillings removed?

When performed using the SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) protocol, amalgam removal is significantly safer than standard removal. The protocol uses rubber dam isolation, high-volume evacuation, sectioning techniques, and air filtration to minimise mercury vapour and particulate exposure.

What is the IAOMT SMART protocol?

SMART stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique. It is a set of evidence-based procedures developed by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) to protect patients, practitioners, and the environment during amalgam removal.

How many appointments will I need?

Most patients require 2–4 appointments, depending on the number of fillings. We typically remove one quadrant per appointment to minimise systemic exposure.

What will replace my amalgam fillings?

We replace amalgam with high-quality, biocompatible composite resin or ceramic restorations — mercury-free, BPA-free, and matched to your natural tooth colour.

Should I do any preparation before amalgam removal?

We provide biological support guidance before removal begins, including nutritional and detox protocols. Our team will discuss this with you at your initial consultation.

Ceramic Implants

What is the difference between a ceramic implant and a titanium implant?

Ceramic (zirconia) implants are 100% metal-free, biologically inert, and do not corrode or conduct electricity. They are an excellent option for patients with metal sensitivities, autoimmune conditions, or a preference for biocompatible materials.

Are ceramic implants as strong as titanium?

Yes. Modern zirconia implants have a strong clinical track record and comparable long-term success rates to titanium implants. They are manufactured to high precision tolerances and are suitable for most implant cases.

How long do ceramic implants last?

With proper care, ceramic implants can last many years — comparable to titanium. Good oral hygiene, regular check-ups, and avoiding excessive bite forces all contribute to implant longevity.

Am I a candidate for ceramic implants?

Suitability depends on bone density, bite, and overall health. We assess each patient individually. A consultation at SHDC will include a review of your dental and medical history, and imaging to determine the best option for you.

Airway & Sleep

What is myofunctional therapy?

Myofunctional therapy uses targeted exercises to retrain the tongue, lips, and facial muscles. It can improve breathing patterns, swallowing, sleep quality, and jaw alignment — for both children and adults.

My child snores — should I be concerned?

Snoring in children can be a sign of airway restriction, mouth breathing, or sleep-disordered breathing. These conditions can affect development, behaviour, and learning. We recommend an assessment if your child snores regularly, breathes through their mouth, or seems tired despite adequate sleep.

What is sleep-disordered breathing?

Sleep-disordered breathing is a spectrum of conditions ranging from simple snoring to obstructive sleep apnoea. It occurs when the airway is partially or fully obstructed during sleep, disrupting oxygen delivery and sleep quality.

Can a dentist help with sleep apnoea?

Yes. Dentists trained in airway dentistry can provide oral appliance therapy, assess airway anatomy, and work alongside sleep physicians and ENT specialists to manage sleep-disordered breathing.

Root Canal

What is SHDC's approach to root canal treatment?

We take a holistic perspective on endodontic care. We use biocompatible materials including ceramic posts, and we have detailed discussions with patients about the biological implications of root canal treatment — including alternatives such as extraction and replacement.

Are there alternatives to root canal treatment?

In some cases, yes. Depending on the tooth and the extent of infection, options may include extraction followed by a ceramic implant or bridge. We discuss all options with patients so they can make an informed decision.

What materials do you use for root canal treatment?

We use biocompatible materials throughout — including ceramic posts rather than metal posts, and carefully selected sealers. We avoid materials with known biological concerns wherever possible.
